Back in November 2015, Nominet, the company responsible for all .UK domains, declared that it would be raising its wholesale domain prices and removing the multi-year discount. These changes are taking place on Tuesday, 1 March, and will put Nominet prices on par with international registries and their domain prices.

Russell Haworth, CEO of Nominet, said in a statement:

“We’re committed to running a first-class service for .UK registrants, including our renowned customer service, and we’re doing more than ever before to ensure the .UK space is safe and trusted home for all. But costs have risen considerably since we last changed the price, and we need to compete in a promotion-driven industry.”

What does this mean for Heart Internet customers?

Because Nominet are raising their prices, we have to raise our prices. From 1 March, the prices will be (excluding VAT):

  • .CO.UK, .ME.UK, and .ORG.UK domains – £6.99

.UK domains will not be affected. And if you are a Reseller, .CO.UK, .ME.UK, and .ORG.UK domain names will be going up to £5.99.

We are also changing the prices of our Nominet one-year domain credits. The prices will be (excluding VAT):

  • 5 Nominet credits – £24.95 (£4.99 per domain)
  • 10 Nominet credits – £48.90 (£4.89 per domain)
  • 25 Nominet credits – £117.25 (£4.69 per domain)
  • 50 Nominet credits – £219.50 (£4.39 per domain)
  • 100 Nominet credits – £409.00 (£4.09 per domain)

Because the multi-year domain discount is being discontinued by Nominet, any two-year domain credits will no longer be valid after 1 March. We will be converting and reissuing these credits on Monday, 29 February.

We are sending out emails to all our customers who have two-year domain credits which explain in detail how the process will work.

Along with these Nominet changes, we are also increasing the price of .COM domain names to £11.99 per year. The Reseller price will remain at £8.49.

What steps can you take to prepare for this price increase?

A price increase is never enjoyable. However, we have a few steps you can take to mitigate the frustration you may be feeling.

Buy up those domains

If you were considering purchasing a domain, now is the time to do it. You can hold a domain for as many years as you need, and now that you’ve saved on the price well before you needed to use it. If you have a new website in mind, an app to develop, or just have a passing fancy, this is the time to buy.

Renew your domains now

By renewing before March 1st, you’ll renew at the current rate and be able to take advantage of the multi-year discount. You can renew your domains for up to 10 years in advance, locking in the current price and avoiding any future price changes.

Buy Nominet domain credits

All single-year Nominet credits will be valid after 1 March. By buying them now, you can purchase or renew a .CO.UK, .ORG.UK, or .ME.UK for £3.99 even after the price increases. And even if you wait until after 1 March to buy your domain credits, you’ll still save by using domain credits – up to £2.90 per domain!

Review your own pricing

If you’re a Reseller, this is the perfect time to look at your own domain prices. How are your margins going to look after the wholesale price increases? Do you need to adjust your API calls or HostPay information? Which domain extensions have been the most popular with your customers, and are you getting all you can out of selling them?
