You know the feeling \u2026 It’s Friday, it\u2019s five to five \u2026 Tonight’s the night! The one night when you finally get to click off on-time and have a weekend. Like a person.<\/p>\n

Then it happens: The phone rings and you hear those doom-laden words: \u201cCan you just \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, they assure you, \u201cIt\u2019ll just be a five minute job!\u201d<\/p>\n

And you know that you\u2019ll be at your desk \u2019til midnight. Again.<\/p>\n

The life of the creative isn’t easy. If it was, everyone would do it – instead of ringing us up at the end of the day and getting us to do it for them.<\/p>\n

But the client wants what the client wants!<\/p>\n

Here are a few examples of those conversations where you just have to keep telling yourself: \u201cThe client is always right \u2026 The client is always right \u2026 The client is always right.\u201d<\/p>\n

1. Everything\u2019s free on the internet, right?<\/h3>\n

\"I'm<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cLook, I\u2019m not a designer, but I\u2019m pretty sure we can use their logo.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cNo, we can\u2019t use their property. It\u2019s their copyright.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cEven if we change the colour?\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Predicting The Future<\/h3>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cHow long will it take for you to build me a website?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cWell, that depends on what you want it to do, how many pages, things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet. So, how long?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cLet me just look in my crystal ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Designed by committee<\/h3>\n

\"I'm<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cAny thoughts on the new version?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cI love it. Signed off. I\u2019m just gonna show it to everyone else in the office and see what the team thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cOh, good.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Photoshop Can Fix Everything<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Can<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cCan you make the sun shine?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cSorry?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cIn the photo. It\u2019s very grey.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cThe photo you supplied? It was taken in the rain.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cYes. Can you make the sun shine?\u201d<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0The font you don\u2019t want<\/h3>\n

\"Can<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cCan the type be in Helvetica?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cBut everyone uses Helvetica. Don\u2019t you want something that\u2019ll stand out?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cHow about Comic Sans?\u00a0 Hello \u2026?\u00a0 Hello \u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n

6. On the money<\/h3>\n

\"I<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cI know designers who charge less.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cI know clients who pay more.\u201d<\/p>\n

7. Writing is easy, everyone can do it<\/h3>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhy am I paying you for a whole day, just to write one line?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cWhy aren\u2019t I charging you for the years of experience and qualifications and the lifetime of skillfully honed craft that went into writing that line?\u201d<\/p>\n

8. You know you want to work for free<\/h3>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t like to pay upfront. You don\u2019t pay for your electricity upfront, you pay for what you use.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cYou pay for your food upfront, whether you eat it or not. I have to eat too.\u201d<\/p>\n

9. Avoiding innovation at all costs<\/h3>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cCan you make it like my competitor\u2019s ad, please?\u00a0 I know that works, their shop\u2019s always full.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cSo they don\u2019t need you to advertise their business as well, then, do they?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cHow do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

10. Online schmonline<\/h3>\n

\"Can<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cCan you build me an eBay?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME: <\/strong>\u201cYou mean an online auction site?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cYeah. That eBay makes millions.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cTrue. Although it took years to build up its business.\u201d
\nCLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cBut that was before the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

11. You know you want to work for free (again)<\/h3>\n

\"Could<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cCould you do me a quick favour?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cFor free?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ve got loads more work lined-up for you, after.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cSo I can charge you upfront for that, then?\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cNo, I thought this was a favour.\u201d<\/p>\n

12. Do you have a time machine?<\/h3>\n

\"So<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cSo, can you do that by tomorrow!\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cNot really, no.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cGreat. Bye.\u201d<\/p>\n
