Managing client expectations is the bane of creatives\u2019 lives. From limitless requirements to limited budgets, to the proverbial \u2018I need it by tomorrow\u2019, there are things clients say that only you will ever get.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re a graphic designer, web designer, tattooist or photographer – you\u2019ve felt the pain. Those moments when the words \u201cthe client is always right\u201d stick in your throat. Try explaining your angst to a friend or loved one – they\u2019ll never understand like you do.<\/p>\n

So it is that when we shared<\/a> recently some of the maddening things clients say, we tapped into a vein of raw creative emotion.<\/p>\n

Well, here we are again, with yet more evidence that clients are the enemy and dealing with them can be a war of nerves.<\/p>\n

Deep breath \u2026 We\u2019re going in:<\/p>\n

1. Hurry up and wait<\/strong><\/h2>\n

ME:<\/strong> “So, you’ve had this for four weeks, but only decided to change it after it went live?”<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>“Is that okay?”<\/p>\n

ME (through gritted teeth):<\/strong> “Why wouldn’t it be?”<\/p>\n

2. I\u2019ll know it when I see it<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t know what I want yet, but it isn\u2019t that.”<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cOhhh-kay.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cI\u2019ll know it when I see it.\u201d
\nME:<\/strong> \u201cOh, good.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Overexposed<\/strong><\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> “You’ll get publicity. Exposure!”<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> “Do I need that, though? After all, you<\/u> found me!”<\/p>\n

4. Just a quickie<\/strong><\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cI have learned that the ease with which the phrase ‘quick job’ is bandied around, is inversely proportional to how long the job will actually take.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Can you just\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> “Can you just…?”<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> “Absolutely. I\u2019ll press the “Can You Just” button and it\u2019ll run sophisticated algorithms that haven’t been invented yet.”<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Same but different <\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> “I want it the same, but different”.<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> “Same stuff, different day.”<\/p>\n

7. Want it yesterday<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> “Yeah, sorry, my version of Photoshop doesn’t have the time travel plugin. So I can’t get that to you by yesterday.”<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> Nods sympathetically.<\/p>\n

8. Print magic<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cI printed it out, but now the gif isn\u2019t moving?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cDid you use the Harry Potter paper?\u201d<\/p>\n

9. Send me the files<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> “We\u2019ve decided to go with another designer, but we really liked your ideas. Can you just send the files over?”<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cHow about \u2018no\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

10. A right tool<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cThis Photoshop file won\u2019t open in Word. What can we do, please?\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cEhm\u2026 Buy Photoshop.\u201d<\/p>\n

11. What have the Romans done for us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cThere\u2019s something wrong. My computer\u2019s turned all the text into Latin.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cLorem Ipsum? No, it\u2019s meant to be like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cBut we don\u2019t sell goods to Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n

12. The one great client who makes it all worthwhile<\/strong><\/h2>\n

CLIENT: <\/strong>\u201cI prefer using you to that bigger agency.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> “You do know I charge about the same as them?”<\/p>\n

CLIENT:<\/strong> \u201cYeah, but with them I\u2019m paying for their big office. With you, I\u2019m paying for your talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

ME:<\/strong> \u201cI think I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Awwww. We thought we\u2019d finish on a high.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re pretty sure there are moments here you\u2019ll recognise from your own bitter, hard-won experiences.<\/p>\n
