{"id":4883,"date":"2009-06-15T12:28:14","date_gmt":"2009-06-15T12:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heartinternet.uk\/blog\/?p=4883"},"modified":"2009-06-15T12:28:14","modified_gmt":"2009-06-15T12:28:14","slug":"system-admins-favourite-firefox-add-ons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heartinternet.uk\/blog\/system-admins-favourite-firefox-add-ons\/","title":{"rendered":"System Admins Favourite FireFox Add-ons!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> As one of the system administrators here at Heart Internet I find myself using my web browser almost all the time.\u00a0 One of the great things about Firefox is the number of free add-ons available that enhance the browsing experience.\u00a0 All the addons for Firefox can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/<\/a> &#8211; but here are a few of our favourites.<\/p>\n<h4>DownThemAll!<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downthemall.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.downthemall.net\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re downloading a large file (for example a website backup) it can be very irritating if you get disconnected or your computer crashes.\u00a0 Typically this always seems to happen within the last 10%!<\/p>\n<p>DownThemAll! is a download manager integrated into Firefox which is able to pause and resume downloads.\u00a0 The neat thing about it is that its completely integrated \u2013 when you start a download you get an option to download with DownThemAll!.<\/p>\n<h4>Xmarks (previously Foxmarks)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/download.xmarks.com\/download\/all\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/download.xmarks.com\/download\/all<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the recent fashion of \u201csmall cheap computers\u201d, it seems everybody has at least 2 computers nowadays.\u00a0 With my home PC, laptop and work computer I can&#8217;t live without Xmarks \u2013 it&#8217;s a bookmark synchroniser which keeps your bookmarks identical across computers.\u00a0 It has some nifty features such as bookmark profiles (so you can vary your bookmark toolbar at work for example), and if you&#8217;re on a computer where you can&#8217;t install the add-on, you can still see your bookmarks from a web page.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s compatible with Firefox on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux \u2013 as well as Internet Explorer and Safari.<\/p>\n<h4>TwitterFox<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitterfox.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/twitterfox.net\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a Twitter fanatic like some of my colleagues, you&#8217;ll find this simple add-on a blessing.\u00a0 It adds an icon on the status bar which will notify you when someone you&#8217;re following tweets on Twitter.\u00a0 You can also quickly tweet or reply to a tweet directly from your browser without loading up Twitter.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heartinternet\">@heartinternet<\/a> while you&#8217;re there!<\/p>\n<h4>Firebug<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getfirebug.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/getfirebug.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is one for the web developers out there (and with our new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartinternet.uk\/reseller-hosting\/reseller-control-panel\">HostPay<\/a> themes out last week, everyone should be trying their hand!).\u00a0 Firebug lets you inspect and alter the current webpage \u2013 allowing you to explore the document tree and CSS styles of a specific element and tweak them instantly in-place.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also got a powerful JavaScript debugger\/profiler that helps you track down those annoying errors.<\/p>\n<h4>VertTabbar<\/h4>\n<p>https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/8045<\/p>\n<p>When one of my colleagues mentioned this add-on to me, I was sceptical.\u00a0 But I find myself becoming more and more attached to it.\u00a0 The add-on simply moves the tab bar to a vertical position on the left-right of your browser.\u00a0 This means you can have more tabs open and still see their titles.\u00a0 It works perfectly on a widescreen monitor where horizontal space isn&#8217;t at a premium.<\/p>\n<h4>Speed Dial<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/4810\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/4810<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speed Dial adds a \u201cquick launch\u201d page to Firefox, where you can put your most used websites with thumbnails for each of them.\u00a0 This feature will be familiar to Opera and Chrome users.\u00a0 It can be configured to appear every time a new tab is opened, making it a good \u201cjumping page\u201d.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a shame it can&#8217;t be synchronised with Xmarks!<\/p>\n<p>What are your favourite add-ons?\u00a0 Or have you jumped ship to Chrome or IE8?\u00a0 Let us know!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As one of the system administrators here at Heart Internet I find myself using my web browser almost all the time.\u00a0 One of the great things about Firefox is the&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8181,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-4883","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-heart-internet"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>System Admins Favourite FireFox Add-ons!
