Make what you say relevant to your audience for better engagement and higher response rates. You can still ask the question, but phrase it in a more specific (and slightly more creative) way. Turn \u2018What are your plans for the weekend?\u2019 into \u2018What design projects are you getting involved with at the weekend?\u2019 for the web industry, \u2018What are you cooking for Sunday lunch?\u2019 for recipe and food sites, \u2018How are you planning to keep your kids entertained over the next few days?\u2019 for family-themed pages, for example.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t think of anything to say, that\u2019s fine too. No one is bothered about whether you\u2019ve just hit 10,000, or you\u2019ve got 5 to go before you hit 100\u2026unless they\u2019re going to get something out of it. Reducing people to numbers is also misleading as it\u2019s the engagement that\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<p>People love being asked for their opinions, so make the most of it to get a discussion going. Create polls, use hashtags and pose questions for comment. You\u2019re giving people a reason to follow them and not you. Make a list of reasons why people would and should follow you on Twitter to help you improve your updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Be different\u2019 also applies across networks. Try to post different things to your Twitter stream and Facebook page rather than cross-posting from one to the other. This way you\u2019re giving people a reason to follow you on both platforms so they don\u2019t miss out.
