Why do I get the message "The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list" when setting up my Exchange mailbox in Outlook?

This error generally occurs because Outlook is checking the local credential manager when attempting to log into the account, rather than checking the Exchange server.

When it does this, Outlook is attempting to check your email using your login details for the computer, rather than the login details for your Exchange email account.

You can fix this problem by following these steps:

  1. Close Outlook
  2. Go into your Windows Control Panel
  3. Go into ‘User Accounts’
  4. Select ‘Mail’
  5. Click ‘Email Accounts…’
  6. Remove all Exchange accounts
  7. Click ‘Close’
  8. Select ‘Manage Windows credentials’ from the User Accounts window
  9. Remove all details that relate to email and Outlook
  10. Tick the dropdown button and click ‘Remove from Vault’
  11. Open Outlook and add in your Exchange details
  12. You should be able to now set up your Exchange mailbox
