What is Java and what can it do?

Java is an object-oriented programming language used for networked applications, such as mobile applications, web-based systems, games, and enterprise software.

Java is regularly used by developers because provides the ability to have your code run on several platforms without needing to recompile. With Java, you can create complete applications, or you can attach a small piece of code into your basic HTML to create a Java applet.

Running Java in your browser requires the use of the Oracle Java runtime.  You can download this from the Java website: www.java.com

Java should not be confused with JavaScript, which is a separate language designed to enhance web browsing through more interactive pages.
