Why can’t I restart BIND after restarting my server?

Recent versions of the DNS software BIND enable strict zone checking at a server’s start up.  However, this can cause problems for BIND users with a large number of zone files or syntax errors in the individual zone files.

In these circumstances, you may be unable to restart BIND after restarting your server.

cPanel has produced and distributed an autofixer that solves this problem.  This autofixer should run automatically on all systems with updates enabled.

However, cPanel checks only occur at specific times, and are dependent on update schedules.  If you are still having difficulty restarting BIND, you can manually executing the code and disabling strict zone checking.

To execute the autofixer manually:

  1. Log into your server via SSH
  2. Run the command:

/scripts/autorepair bind_disable_checkzone

  1. BIND should restart correctly
