What is Linux?

Linux is a UNIX-like operating system designed to provide a free operating system for computers comparable to the usually more expensive UNIX-based systems.

Linux has a reputation for being very efficient and fast-performing, making it ideal for servers, mainframes, supercomputers, mobile phones, and embedded systems, such as network routers and video game consoles.  Linux is also open source and freely redistributable, meaning that there are many versions of Linux out there, each tailored for particular specifications.

Because Linux is free, open source, and fast, it became popular for web servers from early on. With a Linux web server, you can ensure a secure and high-powered hosting environment without needing to increase pricing due to Windows or UNIX licences.
