Now that we are well into December the chances are that if you haven’t already launched your Christmas promotions or themes for your website, you might think it’s too late.
But unlike the tinsel and trees you put up in your home, Christmas website decorations can be really quick and easy to put up and take down.
There are plenty of reasons to make your website festive beyond jumping on the bandwagon. Putting on a few little extra touches or running a special Christmas promo shows visitors that you keep your site up-to-date and gives them something different to look at.
Setting up a promotion
Below is an example of some display artwork that we put together in less than 10 minutes:
All we did here was download a stock background image (https://pixabay.com/en/red-white-snow-silhouette-66447/), add some text using some picture editor software and create a simple Christmas voucher code, easy.
These quick images are really versatile too, you can use them wherever you want on your website. For example, you can resize them and put them in your homepage banner and sidebar which adds a nice bit of consistency. You might also want to use them on social media. Images like this work particularly well on Facebook pages as the main image, again giving you some more consistency across your marketing channels.
Competitions
You can use this same approach for launching a Christmas competition, which is another great way to engage with visitors. Simply put together a bit of simple artwork like the one above, display it on your website and away you go. The great thing about competitions is that they don’t need to be complicated, all you need is a prize or incentive and a quick blog post containing all the details and it’s done.
Tools like Rafflecopter are a great way to generate contests like this, and will help you to manage entries and pick a winner at the end.
If you have access to any forums that are happy for people to promote these kinds of offers, then this is also an easy and cheap way of spreading the word about your competition.
Resources
Changing a few icons like RSS feed buttons can be a nice subtle touch rather than going all out with snow effects and huge background images and, like real Christmas decorations, less is often more.
How much you do depends on what your site is about and what you think looks best, but adding a little festive cheer to your site for a few weeks really can show people a more fun side to your brand and engage visitors that little bit more.
There is no reason why you should put lots of Christmas icons and decorations on every page of your website, you might just want to add a little bit to your homepage to let people know you have done some updates and you have gotten into the Christmas spirit.
A lot of web design blogs and resource websites like GraphicRiver and Creative Market are full of great Christmas resources, here are a few examples of the kind of thing that’s about:

Other effects such as adding JavaScript snow or a Christmas background image to your CSS or HTML is also a quick job, and easy to remove after the festivities are over.
Schillmania.com is one of these, which also has some very addictive smashable Christmas lights available to use, all for free:
