PHP Version Retirement on Managed WordPress Frequently Asked Questions

Article Number: 1876 | Rating: 1/5 from 1 votes | Last Updated: Thu, Jun 9, 2022 at 2:32 PM

Throughout July 2022 we will be retiring any End of Life (EOL) versions of PHP on our Managed WordPress Hosting environments.

End of Life (EOL) versions are no longer supported for security updates, potentially making your shared hosting vulnerable.   Updating to the later PHP versions can also improve performance and stability in some applications.

To prepare for this, we are getting ready to retire the following PHP versions:

  • 5.6
  • 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3

How will I know what PHP version I'm using?

You can find that out from your Managed WordPress Dashboard by navigating to Settings > Production Site > PHP version

What happens if I do nothing?

Our preference is that you manually update the PHP version to ensure your Managed WordPress hosting continues to run as you have set it up.  However, if your PHP is not updated before 17th July 2022, then as a security measure, our team will update your website to version ‘7.4’.  Please note that if we are required to make this update, we do not accept responsibility for any issues that may occur with your website, as a result.

How do I change my PHP version?

  1. Login to https://customer.heartinternet.uk/
  2. Navigate to “Manage Products”
  3. Click on “Manage Managed WordPress”
  4. Use the “Login” button for the desired Managed WordPress Hosting
  5. Navigate to “Settings”
  6. Under “Production Site” you have “PHP version”
  7. Click “Change”
  8. Select the version of PHP you want from the drop-down list
  9. Click “Save Changes”

Your site will now run that version

How do I update my plugins?

  1. Login to https://customer.heartinternet.uk/
  2. Navigate to “Manage Products”
  3. Click on “Manage Managed WordPress”
  4. Use the “Login” button for the desired Managed WordPress Hosting
  5. In the Action Center section next to Keep your site fast and healthy by staying up-to-date, select “Check for Updates”.
  6. Review the list and then select “Update” for individual themes and plugins, or “Update All” to update them all at once.
  7. If you're using “Update All”, confirm your updates and select Update.

You are up to date!
