Providing information for young people to find work experience and apprenticeships, their website has distinctive branded visuals to draw the reader in, as well as a mobile-responsive interface to frame its clear calls-to-action and on-page content.

We sat down with Richard Longmuir, the designer for DYWDA, and asked him a few questions about the site and the design process.

What is DYWDA and what does the website do?

Developing the Young Workforce Dundee & Angus (DYWDA) is a place where students can find information on how to gain valuable work experience and modern apprenticeships.

It also allows teachers and employers to find out how they can get involved in their local communities and collaborate to improve their future workforce.

How does the site support and drive the project’s goals?

The website provides a simple solution for young people, educators, and employers – using illustrations to enforce the main benefits of DYWDA while driving them to get involved with the project. We’ve made it simple and easy to use.

What would you say the website’s personality is?

The website is designed to be interesting for young people, keeping them involved and informed at the same time. It’s welcoming and fun whilst keeping a professional theme throughout.

When you designed the website, did you design with the customer in mind or did you have a fixed idea on how you wanted to portray your brand online?

The website was designed with the end user in mind. We used illustrations and animations to create an interesting and interactive environment for students using the site.

What’s your favourite thing about the website?

I really like how it reflects the personalities of the DYW staff, with the same fun and quirkiness of the staff.

What do you think makes this site different from your competitors?

A lot of the other DYW sites are boring and un-engaging. DYW Dundee & Angus wanted to be different – appealing to young people while keeping all the important information for employers too.

Do you have any future plans for the site?

There are plans in the future to have a job section where employers can upload their jobs and students can apply for them.
