Are you ready for the domain name revolution? | Heart Internet Blog – Focusing on all aspects of the web

A huge change in the way we use domain names is coming soon. ICANN (the governing body that oversees the Domain Name System all domains rely on) has approved the introduction of over a thousand brand new domain extensions to increase choice, competition and make it easier to find the perfect domain name.

Some examples of the new domain extensions you'll soon be able to register include:

  • .food
  • .tech
  • .city
  • .design
  • .web
  • .app
  • .blog
  • .wedding

and many more!

What are all these new domain names?
New Global Top Level Domains (gTLDs) are domain name extensions (alternatives to .com, .co.uk and .de) that will be launching soon. Businesses have applied to ICANN (the organisation which oversees domain names) to operate these gTLDs, many of which will be available for you to purchase.

How can I register one of these new domain name extensions?
These new domain name extensions are not currently available for anyone to register. We will keep you up to date with the information you need as and when these new domain extensions are officially launched and can be pre-registered.

In terms of the process, each new domain name extension must provide trademark owners with at least 30 days to register their trademark. After this, some may choose to have a ‘landrush’ period using criteria of their choosing (e.g. domains they anticipate being hugely popular offered at a premium).  At ‘general release’ anyone will be able to register available domain names for the extension.

How much will these domain names cost?
This isn’t information that is available at the moment, and it will differ from domain to domain. As soon as we have more information about the cost of the new gTLDs you have chosen, we will let you know.

Stay tuned…
Heart Internet customers will be the first to find out about these exciting new domain names, and we have an amazing track record registering the first choice domain names for our customers during previous new domain releases such as .CO and .EU.
