Our top ten retro games to play today (Part 2) | Heart Internet Blog – Focusing on all aspects of the web

In Part 1 of our guide to the top retro games to play today, we covered everything from Sim City 2000 to Fallout to Zork.

But, of course, we can’t limit it to just five games. Here are five more excellent games available now on GOG.

Rollercoaster Tycoon

It doesn’t quite have Theme Park‘s humour but makes up for it with better graphics, more variety, and a sterling rollercoaster design system allowing you to make a metal joyride of death to a delightfully ridiculous degrees. Make your pixellated thrill seekers stare death right in the face, but careful with the bends though or their carts will be ejected skyward, which, (let’s face it) is the game’s most endearing feature.

Baldurs Gate 2

Bang this on with a couple of mods to experience one of the richest classic Dungeons & Dragons RPGs ever made. Never topped by Bioware since, though Dragon Age: Origins was a valiant attempt to bring the magic back. Great characters, rich locations awash with historical backstory and a true sense of adventure in a world full of magic and intrigue.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

You control a team of up to six different operatives, each with unique skills (Commando, Sapper, Medic, etc.) in elite secret missions throughout World War 2. Commandos provides rock-solid isometric gameplay with an emphasis on stealth and tactics. Meticulously plan your strategy and let your team execute their objectives to perfection, or (more likely) watch the whole thing blow up in your face.

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee

Guide the lovable Abe through the underbelly of the Rapture Farms Processing Plant in his mission to emancipate his downtrodden fellow workers in a bizarro cartoonish world. 2D puzzle-solving with a platforming bent and a potent sense of the surreal. A paean for the working class and a game in which you can make your main character fart. Insta-buy.

System Shock 2

You wake up on the starship Von Braun and something horrible has happened. Irrational and Looking Glass Studio’s sci-fi milestone is a classic of game design. Providing a truly memorable villain in the sinister sentient computer A.I. SHODAN, a foreboding atmosphere that calls to mind the original Alien, and some of the downright scariest moments in gaming – period. Oh god THE SPACE MONKEYS.
