Choosing a colour scheme for a website isn’t always easy.
Not least because the average person can distinguish between 10 million different hues.
So where on earth do you start picking a palette of just five or so shades?
Of course, client briefs help here.
However, what do you do if your client asks for your own opinions on the colours they should use on their site?
In this blog, we look at the colours that are trending around the world right now, to give you some inspiration for web design in 2022.
- Very Peri
Every year the colour experts at Pantone announce a Colour of the Year.
To come up with this colour they carry out research into everything from emerging trends in film and fashion to changes in socio-economics and lifestyles.
The colour of the year for 2022 is Very Peri, which Pantone describes as a ‘new blue shade’ and ‘a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone’.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute said:
“As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue colour family.
“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
- Calming Coral
Just like Pantone, Shutterstock releases a Colour Trends Report every year.
To compile the report, Shutterstock’s researchers analyse the pixel shade data of millions of images downloaded from their site. They then calculate which colours have been the most popular in the past year.
Calming Coral is one of three colours picked out in Shutterstock’s 2022 Colour Trends Report.
Shutterstock says: ‘Its warmth encourages us to embrace our vulnerability, bringing to the forefront feelings of comfort and peace.
The company also advises: ‘This muted, peachy pastel gets along splendidly with other members of the pastel family. It plays especially well with dusty yellows and pinks for a nostalgic tint to your design work. Consider contrasting it with sky blue to round out a comforting, natural palette.’
- Velvet Violet
Velvet Violet is another colour picked out as popular by Shutterstock.
Shutterstock explains: ‘The hue carries a decidedly regal tone, confident in its dignified grace and allure.
‘Velvet Violet embodies purple’s traditional associations with royalty. Its natural complement is a contrasting shade of green—like emerald—which pair up in perfect harmony. Given its darker placement on the color spectrum, it also serves as a superb base for flashy accents of the neon-electric sort.’
- Pacific Pink
Pacific Pink is the third colour that the Shutterstock team identified as popular. The Shutterstock team called it ‘the trendiest colour in this year’s report’.
They said the colour ‘brings to mind images of a fading flower pressed between pages of an old book’.
The also revealed: ‘Pacific Pink is reminiscent of that inevitable blush that appears when you’re overcome by a sense of giddiness. It looks marvelous when paired with other pink and peachy tones. And like its namesake, apply it to a complementary light teal to evoke the sun setting over a glimmering Pacific beach.’
- Emerald Green
Emerald Green has been picked out as Etsy’s Colour of the Year 2022.
The online marketplace chose the colour after it discovered that searches for emerald green products had increased by 64% in recent months.
Etsy’s trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson said: ‘‘Symbolizing harmony and growth, along with royalty and refinement, emerald green is the perfect color to remind us to find balance this year.’
- Orchid Flower
The trend forecasting company WGSN picked out Orchid Flower as its colour of the year for 2022.
WGSN said: ‘Orchid Flower has an intense, hyper-real and energizing quality that will stand out in both real-life and digital settings.
‘In a challenging time, this saturated magenta tone will be a great way to create a sense of positivity and escapism.’
