In order to carry out a migration from your Managed server, you will first need your server login details for said server, plus its primary IP address. Once you have these, the process should be straightforward.
Note: Due to a policy update, we are not able to provide the root password for a Manage Virtual Private Server, even if it is to be cancelled.
If your Plesk Reseller credentials are not accepted by your migration tool, contact support and we will initiate the migration on your behalf to any Heart Internet hosted VPS.
1. Log in to the new server that you intend to migrate data to. You can access the Plesk/cPanel account for this server by logging into your Heart account, accessing the "Manage VPS/Hybrid Server" section, then selecting your new server. From there, make a note of the root login details, and then click the login button to access the control panel.
2. Once logged in, you should be able to use the search function to look for the migrator tool in either control panel.
For Plesk:
You will need to click "Start migration", select the control panel that you are migrating from (This will always be Plesk when migrating from a managed server), enter the access details for the Managed server, and then submit. This will then give a list of sites to migrate, which you can select some or all of from the list, and then start the migration. This will begin the pre-migration checks to make sure that the sites are compatible with the new server. If there are errors/warnings, then you can still carry out the migration, followed by server/site modifications afterward where needed. Once started, it's simply a case of waiting for that to complete.
For cPanel:
This process is much the same as Plesk, you can get to the migrator tool at this location in the control panel:
WHM >> Home >> Transfers >> Transfer Tool
The tool will walk you through the process of the migration itself, you'll need the following details, then once entered, you can fetch the account list which will allow you select which sites you want to move over:
Remote Server Address: Enter the IP address of the source server
Remote SSH Port: 22
Login: Select root
Authentication Method: Select SSH
Root Password: Enter the root password for the source server
Select the sites you need, then click "copy" which will then start the migration over for you, presenting a progress bar.
3. Once the migrations are done, it's just doing checks that the data is all there and working as you need it to, and once you're happy, update the DNS to make the new site live. It is strongly recommended that you keep the old server running while you do these checks.
The best way to test a site before updating the DNS is to update your hosts file on the computer you're testing from. What this basically does is set your computer to load the site from an IP of your choosing, in this case, the new server's IP address. There are a few ways to do this based on your operating system, so it's recommended that you use a search engine like Google to find a guide. Searching something along the lines of "Update Windows host file" will quickly give you a guide, which is a simple process then only takes a few minutes.
Once that's updated and you've tested the site, you can update the DNS by either contacting your nameserver provider for the domain in question, or if Heart is your nameserver provider, you can update the DNS from the management page for the domain in the "Manage domain name" section of your account.
If you run into any issues at all with the initial migration of the site, please feel free to contact the Heart support team, though please do keep in mind that beyond the migration, the service is unmanaged, and therefore, we do not offer support for any services on the unmanaged platform.
