How do I use trackbacks in WordPress?

WordPress has the option to use Trackbacks, a way to reference other blogs and their posts in your own blogs and comments, much like acknowledgements and references in academic papers and books.

This can be a good way to engage in conversation with other bloggers and get your blog noticed, but it is also regularly abused by spammers, which means it may be deactivated by the blogs you are looking at.

How to use a Trackback:

  1. Go to the post on the blog you want to link to and look for a link that says ‘Trackback URI’ or similar
  2. Right-click on the link and select ‘Copy link address’
  3. Log into your WordPress blog and edit the post you want to connect with
  4. Under “Send Trackbacks”, paste in the URL of the Trackback URI you want to link to
  5. Update your post

Your trackback may appear on their blog instantly, or it may be in a moderation queue.
